An invented term that originated in the Boy Scouts of America c. 1954. The Bear Cub Scout Book of 1954 claims that “Webelos” is an American Indian tribe of which Akela is chief, and that the name comes from “Wolf, Bear, Lion, Scout.”

Boy Scouts in positions of leadership run the troop. They take care of the many tasks necessary for troop and patrol meetings and activities to run smoothly. It is also a way to keep Boy Scouts interested and involved—keep them busy, organized, and trained, and give them opportunities to lead.

The Webelos Scout Program prepares boys who have completed third grade or are age 10 but have not yet completed fifth grade or reached age 11 1/2 to bridge into a troop. Pronounced “WEE-buh-los”, the word “Webelos” means WE’ll BE LOyal Scouts.

ARROW OF LIGHT AWARD. The highest rank in Cub Scouting is the Arrow of Light Award. Earning this rank prepares a Webelos Scout to become a Boy Scout. Webelos Scouts who have earned the Arrow of Light Award have also completed all requirements for the Boy Scout badge.

Webelos Scouts may choose to wear either the blue Webelos uniform based on the Cub Scout uniform or the tan/olive uniform similar to the one that Boy Scouts wear. Official blue socks (with gold tops) are worn with the blue uniform, and official olive socks (with red tops) are worn with the tan/olive uniform.

The Gold Award is the highest achievement within the Girl Scouts of the USA, earned by Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts. Only 5.4% of eligible Girl Scouts successfully earn the Gold Award.

The shape of the Scout badge means that a Scout can point the right way in life as truly as does a compass in the field. There are two stars on the badge. They symbolize truth and knowledge. The eagle and shield stand for freedom and a Scout’s readiness to defend that freedom.

The 13 current requirements for Eagle Scout, the highest rank in Boy Scouting, involve earning 21 merit badges including 13 from this list: Camping.

The Order of the Arrow (OA) is the National Honor Society of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). The society was created by E. Urner Goodman, with the assistance of Carroll A. Edson, in 1915 as a means of reinforcing the Scout Oath and the Scout Law.

Founder Juliette Gordon Low organized the first Girl Scout troop on March 12, 1912, in Savannah, Georgia. Girl Scouts of the USA was chartered by the US Congress on March 16, 1950. Today, there are 2.6 million Girl Scouts—1.8 million girl members and 800,000 adult members working primarily as volunteers.

Eagle Scout is the highest achievement or rank attainable in the Boy Scouting program of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). The designation “Eagle Scout” was founded over one hundred years ago. Only four percent of Boy Scouts are granted this rank after a lengthy review process.

Merit Badges are the second main area of the Boy Scout advancement program. Unlike ranks, there is a degree of choice in the merit badge program. A sub-group of merit badges are known as Eagle required merit badges.

1st graders are Tiger Cubs, 2nd graders are Wolf Cubs, 3rd graders are Bear Cubs, and 4th and 5th graders are Webelos. In the second half of the 5th grade school year the scouts move up to a Boy Scout Troop. Every Scout must first earn this patch before starting on their Den Rank requirements.

Webelos is an acronym meaning “We’ll Be Loyal Scouts”. According to the Bear Cub Scout Book of 1954, the name originally came from the initial letters of “wolf, bear, lion, Scout”, the rank of “Lion Cub Scout” was dropped in 1967.

In English, this motto is most commonly Be Prepared. In the third part of Scouting for Boys Robert Baden-Powell explains the meaning of the phrase: The Scout Motto is: BE PREPARED which means you are always in a state of readiness in mind and body to do your DUTY.

The Patrol Method. Patrols are the building blocks of a Boy Scout troop. A patrol is a small group of boys who are similar in age, development, and interests. Working together as a team, patrol members share the responsibility for the patrol’s success. They gain confidence by serving in positions of patrol leadership.
