MARINE CORPS RANKS. Often referred to as the backbone of the Corps, enlisted Marines with pay grades of E-4 and E-5 are non-commissioned officers (NCOs). Staff NCOs are career Marines serving in grades E-6 through E-9.

The Marine Corps Staff NCOs are those career Marines serving in grades E-6 through and including E-9. The ranks include Staff Sergeant (E-6), Gunnery Sergeant (E-7), Master Sergeant / First Sergeant (E-8), and Master Gunnery Sergeant / Sergeant Major (E-9).

A new change to Marine Corps policy will require some Marines to wait longer before they are eligible for promotion. The new guidelines stipulate that, as of April 1, Marine lance corporals and corporals must spend 12 months in their current rank before they can be looked at for promotion to corporal or sergeant.

The United States Marine Corps Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) is a system of categorizing career fields. All enlisted and officer Marines are assigned a four-digit code denoting their primary occupational field and specialty.

A Marine Corps staff sergeant generally has six to eight years of service with the Corps, although it can take less or more time, based on the candidate’s military occupational specialty. It’s the Corps’ goal to stabilize the time in service before attaining staff sergeant at about 8 1/2 years.
