What can I transfer with Migration Assistant?

Migration Assistant is a utility by Apple Inc. that transfers data, user accounts, computer settings and apps from one Macintosh computer to another computer, or from a full drive backup. Migration Assistant can be used during initial setup of a new computer or run manually on a system that has already been set up.

Deactivate Acrobat XI/X, Creative Suite 6, and earlier

Make sure your computer is connected to the Internet.

Launch the application.

Choose Help > Deactivate.

Choose one of the following options: Deactivate or Suspend Activation: These options deactivate the software but retain licensing information on your computer.

You may install software on up to two computers. These two computers can be Windows, Mac OS, or one each. If you install on a third computer, it will request you to de-activate on the other two computers. You can then reactivate one of the previous two computers, and use Creative Cloud apps on it.

Actually, some software can indeed run from a USB drive (a.k.a. flash drive). Heavy-duty apps like Office and Photoshop, for instance, are inextricably tied to the operating system; you could theoretically install them on your flash drive, but they wouldn’t run on any other PC.

Obviously the application won’t be there when the drive isn’t plugged in. With some programs, that could give you grief even if you don’t intend to run the program. Also, USB is slower than EISA and SATA, so the program won’t perform as well as it should. But why do you want to put a program on an external drive?

Some HP computers, such as HP Mini notebook computers, do not have CD/DVD drives. If you want to install software from a disc onto a computer that does not have a CD/DVD drive, use one of the methods described in this document. An external CD/DVD drive can be plugged into any available USB port on your notebook.

To play a CD or DVD. Insert the disc you want to play into the drive. Typically, the disc will start playing automatically. If it doesn’t play, or if you want to play a disc that is already inserted, open Windows Media Player, and then, in the Player Library, select the disc name in the navigation pane.

Optical drives, that can read and write CDs, DVDs, and sometimes Blu-ray discs, have been an important part of the PC universe for a long time. But there’s less and less need for them.

Short for Compact Disc-Read Only Memory, a CD-ROM (shown right) is an optical disc which contains audio or software data whose memory is read only. A CD-ROM Drive or optical drive is the device used to read them.

Optical Disk Drive Defined. An optical disk drive (ODD) uses a laser light to read data from or write data to an optical disc. These include CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs. This allows you to play music or watch movies using pre-recorded discs.

A computer hard disk drive (HDD) is the mechanism that controls the positioning, reading and writing of the hard disk, which furnishes data storage. Hard disk drives can be found in desktop computers, mobile devices, consumer electronics and enterprise storage arrays in data centers.

Some devices require the larger size bay. Obviously, a 5.25″ floppy drive needs one, and so do all CD-ROM and DVD drives (CDs and DVDs are 4.75 inches wide). Many tape drives do as well, as do many removable storage drives. A 3.5″ floppy drive will of course fit in a 3.5″ bay.

Those with an opening in the front of the case are generally used for floppy or Zip drives. Hard drives in modern computers are typically mounted in fully internal 4″ (nominally 3.5″) bays. Most modern computers do not come with an internal floppy drive at all and often lack any externally accessible 3.5″ bays.

It is generally acknowledged as good practice to burn audio CDs at speeds no higher than 4x, but it is also important that you use good-quality blank media specifically designed for low-speed burning. Most computer media these days is designed for very high-speed burning, usually over 24x.

In the mid-20th Century, people were using turntables to spin records at 45 revolutions per minute. CDs spin at an angular speed of 500 rpm when read from the center and 200 rpm when read near the circumference. Besides having an angular velocity, the CD also has a constant linear velocity (CLV).

Although similar to a CD (Compact Disc), DVDs are more densely packed with data and spin faster. DVDs hold seven times more information and spin three times faster than a CD. The rotational speed, or angular velocity, of a DVD goes between 570-1600 rpm (rotations per minute).

A cd can be used to hold video data. This means that the vob (container) is the file that contains the video and audio portions of a video in one format that can be read by a dvd player. Its the expected way that video is compressed onto a dvd.

Using your computer’s CD-writer you can burn your movie onto a normal CD-R blank, and create a VCD, or “video cd.” This format is very popular in Asia, and has been around longer than DVD. Part of VCD’s popularity is that these movies are burned onto normal CD blanks … cheap CD-R’s that you can buy for 15 cents each!

Steps

Get a blank DVD.

Put the blank DVD on your computer’s CD/DVD drive.

Select to “Burn” files.

Type in any name you want for the DVD on the text field provided.

Go to the folder on your computer where the video you want to copy to a DVD is located.

Click on the “Burn” button at the upper left of the DVD drive window.
